A Quick Guide To The MOT Test

An annual MOT test is a legal requirement for any vehicle over three years old. The MOT test is designed to ensure that all vehicles driven on the roads meet
the minimum safety and environmental standards required by law at the time of testing. It does not mean that the vehicle is roadworthy for the lenght of time the certificate is valid and the MOT certificate is no guarantee of the mechanical condition of the vehicle. As a specialist and an official MOT centre in Barnet we are authorised to provide MOT testing for vehicles of class 1,2 and 4 by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). Essentially that means that we are authorised to perform an MOT check on cars and motorcycles.

During the MOT test one of our VOSA approved MOT testers will conduct a comprehensive MOT inspection and a series of checks to your car both internally and externally, under the bonnet and underneath the vehicle. There is an MOT check list of items which must be checked and completed during the MOT test proceedure in order to fully asses a vehicle. The main checks are:

Body and Vehicle Structure
Fuel System
Exhaust System & Emissions
Seat & Seat Belts
Doors
Mirrors
Load Security
Brakes
Tyres & Wheels
Registration Plates
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
Lights & Signals
The Bonnet
Windscreen, Wipers & Washers
The Horn
Steering & Suspension

  MOT Test - Pass
If the car passes the MOT test you are then issued a VT20, commonly known as an MOT Test Pass Certificate and your vehicle is considered to have met the minimum safety and environmental standards. It means that at the time of testing that it was considered legal to drive on the road in the eyes of the law. It is important to remember that an MOT test does not guarantee the general mechanical condition of the vehicle. K-Max recommend that you perform regular checks and servicing on your vehicle so that you are not putting your safety at risk and in the interest of maintaining the intergrity of the vehicle. Please feel free to ask us for guidance.

MOT Failure. What happens if my car fails the test ?
If your vehicle fails the MOT test you will then be issued with a VT30, an MOT failure. Our car mechanics will identify the problems identified during the MOT checks so that you can have your car repaired before an MOT re-test can be undertaken. The MOT failure means that there will be some car repairs or car servicing work that needs to be done to bring the vehicle up to the required safety standards. Once modified the car should then achieve an MOT pass certificate. At K-Max we offer a full range of garage services, so we can repair or service your car for you. On your instruction our car mechanics will complete the necessary repairs to make your car road worthy and legal to drive. Whether you decide to have the car repairs done at K-Max, or go elsewhere is up to you. We will of course be more than happy to do the necessary car repairs for you if that is your preference. Whatever you decide, we will allow you to have an MOT re-test for free within 10 working days of the MOT failure. It is of course important to note that if your car does not have a valid MOT certificate your insurance may be invalidated.

Pass Or Fail - A Service We Promise !
Whether your vehicle passes or fails the MOT test we will also inform you of any other items that we consider to be in need of attention. It may just be advice about keeping an eye on certain items like tyres that will need replacement due to tread running low, or identifying brake pads that are wearing thin. We will endeavour to advise you purely as a precautionary measure because at the K-Max MOT centre we pride ourselves on our consideration for all of our customers safety.

  Important Points To Remember:

An MOT pass means that at the time of testing the vehicle met the minimum safety and environmental requirements.

The MOT Certificate does not guarantee the mechanical integrity of the vehicle.

If your vehicle does not have a valid MOT certificate then your insurance is invalidated.

New technology means that police and government agencies can check if you have an MOT certificate at the click of a button.

All vehicles over 3 years old must have a valid MOT certificate to be considered roadworthy in the eyes of the law.
